Explanation: In case the previous answers are not clear enough, let me explain to you how one is supposed to address others in Romanian and in other languages, such as French. There used to be in English a distinction between "thou" and "ye" (the archaic form of "you"). While nowadays "you" is used to address one or several people, it used to be that, if there was only one, there was a singular form used to address one person. This is still the case in Romanian, and that word is "tu". However, using the plural form when talking to one person only shows respect or social distance.
