Russian term or phrase: ширь
(still translating diplomas)
Among the subject heading for grades at a music college, under main heading Практика, one of the subheadings is
Основы познания ширя.
So, Fundamentals of comprehension of breadth?
Or is ширь used in some special meaning unique to a musical context?

See
ipc3.narod.ru/info.htm = основы научного познания мира
Методологические основы познания мира (see in nios.org.ru/ruo/cen/centr_roo/konkurs/les_year.htm )
This subject can be translated as Foundataions for wourld knowledge, Basements of the knwoledge of world, Introduction to knwoledge of world, Foundations for Perception of World,

OK, thank you very much! The subject heading in question is an extra one written in by hand (most of the others are typed), and on looking at it again and comparing it with other hand-written words, I can see that the writer forms the letter "a" so that it looks more like a "я" to me. And though "m" and "ш" look very similar in handwriting, there is a little hook at the beginning which you get with "m" but not "ш".
I'm afraid my Russian-handwriting reading ability is not as good as it should be. I recently turned down a job of translating someone's medical records because I knew the entries would be hand-written by doctors, and even handwriting in English by English doctors is usually almost impossible to read!
Thanks again.

...I wonder where the heck English native speakers are what with the quality of English one reads in the Russian>English community.

This is not an answer, Jack, simply a call to my English native-speaking colleagues to be more active and make their presence known.

By the way, I'd translate your phrase to: fundamentals of world knowledge

Explanation:
Jack, the philosophical term for познание is cognition, while perception means восприятие, ощущение (а это уже совсем иная философская категория, насколько я помню!), so it should be simply "Fundamentals of cognition" (and "world" is unnecessary).
