На Западе мало кто знает Тургенева. Поэтому лучше дать такой перевод.

a solitary girl

Explanation:
"A solitary person" is one that not only frequently spends time alone but also enjoys being alone. I think this is what best describes "мечта Тургенева".

See references for "Тургеневская девушка" and "Solitary Personality Type".

disagree  Susan Welsh: Your Wiki link is interesting, but "solitary" doesn't fit at all. It has many meanings rather than "enjoys being alone." A person can be solitary and miserable.

-> I don't say this is the ideal version. But this is what I could suggest based on the psychological characteristics of "Тургеневская девушка" in one word. And the same way the word "miserable" has many meanings rather than "unhappy".
