Мне тут вечерком подумалось про советские пережитки...

Думаю, что очень даже хорошо, что у vestiges есть совдеповский оттенок. Статья явно написана русским программистом, а русские программисты ох как любят проводить параллели с советскими временами! Прямо иногда шедевры выдают на эту тему! Поэтому, чтобы передать всю прелесть исходного текста и будет правильно использовать именно vestiges, don\'t you think?

And, Jack, thank you for this prompt. When you use those dictionaries, published here, there is always a chance to come across a word that has a Soviet connotation and you would never know about it.

То же самое и про \"ломку\", кстати, которая в предыдущем вопросе была...

Если уж человек старался, писал, выдумывал, задавал индивидуальный тон всему тексту, то и при переводе надо стараться выдержать этот стиль, разве нет? Иными словами, зачем же \"стандартизировать его элементы\"?

neutral  Jack Doughty: Maybe just to me, but "vestiges" has a Soviet feel about it. They would often talk about "пережитки прошлого", which we translated as "vestiges of the past".
