Russian term or phrase: Dejstvuyushchego otryada
Historical/naval. "D" is capitalized. Occurs in this context: "Posle grazhdanskoj voiny korabli Dejstvuyushchego otryada Baltijskogo flota, kotoryj fakticheski...". Would appreciate help in how this naval component of the Baltic Fleet has been previously rendered. Many thanks.

Explanation:

“Otryad korabley” is translated into English as “detachment” (MultiLex 2.0). The more specific expression would be “naval detachment” (I found many examples of “naval detachment” on the web; however, “active naval detachment” does not exist). One way to render this term is to write “active detachment of vessels” (see the example below):

“... Fleet (Deistvuiushchaia armiia i flor); Active Defense; Active Detachment of Vessels
(Azov Naval Flotilla, 1920); Active Detachment of Vessels (Baltic Fleet, 1918 ... “

However, in your context, I would use “the Active Detachment of the Baltic Fleet”, or “the Baltic Active Detachment”.

Hope that this helps.

Artyan

Operational detachment

Explanation:
'Acting' might give the sense that this detachment is only a temporary unit of organisation, whereas it is the naval equivalent of an army in the field, as opposed to one in barracks.

Operating naval force

Explanation:
Because "force" is "a body (as of troops or ships) assigned to a military pupose, while "detachment" most frequently means "a permanently organized separate unit usu. smaller than a platoon and different in composition from normal units".

Acting Detachment

Explanation:

I would like to send another answer, if I could. Please also consider using "acting" instead of "active". "Acting Detachment" is more common, and can sound more natural and less misleading (e.g. "Acting Detachment Commander". See an example of "acting detachment" below:

combat platoon / company

Explanation:
otryad = PLATOON, COMPANY

Unfortunately, the translation depends on the size.

dejstvuiyushij = active, taking part in battles

active:

2: (military) engaged in or ready for military or naval
operations; "on active duty"; "the platoon is
combat-ready"; "review the fighting forces" [syn: {combat-ready},
{fighting(a)}]

projects.ghostwheel.com/dictionary?define=active.

Good luck.

Davorka.
