Russian vozhdushno-dessantnye voiska were not paratroopers, but heavily armed assault troops, possessing anti tank guns and light tanks. In their "true" role they were delivered to the assault area in aircraft and gliders, but more oftne fought as elite ground troop formations or for operations behind enemy lines.
