Russian term or phrase: покрутить пальцем у виска
A volunteer for the Donbass against Ukraine regrets his decision to get involved.

А если я погибну, то за кого или за что? Мне-то казалось, что там, на небесах, я покручу себе возле виска… Как-то все глупо. С самого начала я задавал себе вопрос: что меня сюда привело?

Can only find it translated literally as "to twist a finger against the temple", but that means nothing to me.

English translation:make a 'cuckoo' sign / make a 'screw loose' sign
Explanation:
I've already entered this into Multitran.

For your particular translation, I would avoid referring to any gestures but say something like what I've suggested in the discussion area:

"What was I thinking?"
"What kind of madness came over me?"
etc.
