1995 — Universal celebrations took place in honor of the 700th anniversary of the finding of the Kursk-root icon of the Mother of God, the Directress of the Russian diaspora.
However I would be very cautious to use it, as it does bear a negative connotation: a: something invented: as (1): a product of the imagination; especially : a false conception (see the link above). You yourself had to mention that it's not fabrication.
По крайней мере могут использоваться как синонимы. На мой взгляд "явление" - активное действие, а обретение - более пассивное. Поэтому я бы перевел the site of appearance of Virgin Mary and the site of the finding of the Icon of Virgin Mary

Appearance - это в христианстве называется "явлением". Я серьезно говорю, в нашей русской церкви служба идет на двух языках. Если нужно, я позвоню. Не хотелось бы погрешностью перевода кого-то обидеть.
Tikhvin. According to Church Tradition, this Icon was written by the Holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. In the 5th Century is was transferred from Jerusalem to Constantinople, where it was placed in the Blachernae Church. In 1383, about 70 years before the capture of Constantinople by the Turks, the Icon vanished from the church and with luminous rays of light appeared over the waters of Lake Ladoga. Wondrously borne from place to place, it finally settled near the city of Tikhvin.
On the site where the Icon appeared, there was constructed a wooden church in honor of the Dormition of the Most-Holy Theotokos. Later, with great fervor, Grand Prince Vasily (1505-1533) constructed a stone church in place of the wooden one. In 1560, at the order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, a men's monastery was erected by the church, enclosed by a stone wall.
Обретение иконы у верующих принято называть "явлением". Это всегда ЧУДЕСНОЕ появление. Об этом сказано у профессора Кабакчи, который специализируется на межкультурной коммуникации и диалоге религий. Он предлагает вариант "appearance". Мне кажется, точно.
