coliform bacteria (!!!!!)
Explanation:
I think the best reference should be the following artcile:
=======================================

coliform bacteria are the microorganisms that usually occur in the intestinal tract of animals, including man, and are the most widely accepted indicators of _water_ _quality_ in U.S.A.. More precisely they are evidence of recent human fecal contamination of water supplies.

The coliforms are facultative anaerobic (not requiring oxygen), nonsporulating, _rod-shaped_ _bacteria_ that produce acid and
gas from the fermentation of lactose sugar: e.g., Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.
===================================
Moreover, terms like E.coli are too jargon.

Bacteria of the group Escherichia coli

Explanation:
This group of bacteria is (I believe) the common type found in the human intestine and in polluted food and water.

E.coli

Explanation:
I think it would be more common in a scientific text (or commercial specification) to use just the short version of the name of the bacterial group. "Bacteria of the group..." is never used, it is understood.
For example, "E.coli not present".

Hope this helps.

(bacteria of) colon bacillus group

Explanation:
Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary (9th edition) does not reduce the colon bacillus (rod-shaped bacteria found in intestines) to E.coli only, though it does read: "Bacillus coli communis is the most commonly found bacteria in the colon "; I guess, the whole genus group could be referred to as "colon bacillus".
I found the same in the English-Russian Medical Dictionary (70.000 "Russkii Yazyk", Moscow, 1988) КИШЕЧНАЯ ПАЛОЧКА - COLON BACILLUS.
Regards, GI
