Spanish term or phrase: mesma
This is the title of a work by Argentine painter Xul Solar:

La mesma orienta

It predates the period where he used Neocriollo titles. I am not sure if mesma is an invented or actual word, and couldn't figure it out online.

I am looking at the painting and have no doubt. "Mesma" is "misma" mispronounced and was used by gauchos and uneducated country people.

agree  Muriel Vasconcellos: It's also perfectly good Portuguese, which has influenced Spanish in the Southern Tier.

  -> Thanks, Muriel.

neutral  philgoddard: Maybe, but do you have any references? Wikipedia describes him as an inventor of imaginary languages, so it could be made up. / But what does orienta mean?

  -> "Dios hizo al blanco y al negro sin declarar los mejores; les mandó iguales dolores bajo de una mesma cruz" from Martín Fierro, a book written in 1872. "Orienta" means "orientación".

agree  Charles Davis: Certainly not made up! It's perfectly good archaic Spanish. It was a standard form until the 17th century, though it was becoming archaic by the 18th.

  -> Thanks, Charles.

agree  Marie Wilson: I remember Martín Fierro from university days, part of the course.
11 hrs
  -> Thanks, Marie. We read Martín Fierro "to start becoming acquainted with it" in primary school and then learnt more insightful details in secondary school. It is never even mentioned these days.
