Spanish term

Colonia

Spanish to English Law/Patents Certificates, Diplomas, Licenses, CVs Death Certificate
In this document, there is a line for "address." Below the line, three different words appear. "Calle," "Colonia," and "Localidad." Is there an English equivalent for this term or is it best to leave it as "Colonia?

Thank you.

Ricardo Galarza Oct 21, 2008:
But in any case, for an address, the best is just to leave it as is, IMHO. Regards!
Ricardo Galarza Oct 21, 2008:
it is important to know the target here.
Ricardo Galarza Oct 21, 2008:
What matters here is the target: If it's the US, the translation should be "neighborhood." Virginia is right about Äustralia: there, a suburb is a residential district of a city, whether within it or in the outskirts. That's why
Virginia Dominguez Oct 21, 2008:
To clarify something about suburb, in some places of the world suburb is just that. For example in Sydney and in the rest of the cities of Australia the word suburb means a neighbourhood or 'barrio' that's the way it is here, that's how I interpreted.

Hola Virginia, a "delegación" is a political subdivision, so I would translate it as such. I don't know the source for Wikipedia, but even the name of the Church is wrong. It is not "Santa María" but "Templo del Purísimo Corazón de María" www.ciudadmex
eski Oct 21, 2008:
To clarify a point, you are not-as I understand it, changing the address. The document would read, for instance:"Street":xxx, "Subdivision":xxx, "City/State:xxx."
Virginia Dominguez Oct 21, 2008:
Hola Maru, no son los "boroughs" mira la siguiente explicación http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonia_del_Valle
aqui explica clarito que Colonia del Valle es un barri del "borough" de Benito Juarez. Saludos.
José J. Martínez Oct 21, 2008:
Sincerely, and with all respect, call the Colonia whatever you want but just realize that it is a part of the address sometimes useful, sometimes not so much.

Please stop mis-using the 'clarification' area of the KudoZ page and take your discussion to the 'linguistic discussion' box - and put an end to the stream of unwanted e-mail notifications filling everyones' inboxes. Gracias.

José J. Martínez Oct 21, 2008:
The reason I use Sector is because it becomes a fraction of a city or town. What happens in Mexico is that when a new area is going to be developed, they give it a name, say Bella Vista but there are no homes there. Once they start building and...
José J. Martínez Oct 21, 2008:
I do have reservations in using District, Washington DC, Mexico DF are districts,...to big a word. To use suburb, maybe the word is also too big because that is usually a city or a part of a city that is away from the center of town, usually a newer area,
Maru Villanueva Oct 21, 2008:
It is not really a suburb, the "colonias" in Mexico are the "districts" or "boroughs" within and outside the city.
Virginia Dominguez Oct 21, 2008:
It is the name of the suburb, there are a few more with the name starting with Colonia, I would leave as it is.
José J. Martínez Oct 21, 2008:
city is the Set and the colonia is a subset. Name it what you wish...for the sake of translations, I always put Centro Sector, Benoto Juarez Sector, Miramar Sector, etc...but it can be also called miramar district, miramar subdivision, etc.

Maru Villanueva Oct 21, 2008:
I would definitely leave it as is but would put "district" in parentheses to be understood by a foreign citizen.

I am in Sonora, Mexico right now. In Mexico the term colonia is an integral partn of an address. They overdo the address descriptions as a rule. They try to give in an address the mailing information as well as the getting there information. For example..
skam (asker) Oct 21, 2008:
I do understand what a "colonia" is, but this is a formal document. I'm wondering the best way to handle this word, since this portion of an address doesn't exist in the US culture.

The document is from Sonora, Mexico.

What is the country of origin of the document?

Leave as is

Calle=Road or Street; Colonia=Cologne - the town in Germany and Localidad = place - normally the name of the town. I would leave this as is, if it is an address.

Sector

This is very typical in Mexico. It is basically a sector of the city. Usually if it improves the designation of the address it is worthwhile to put in if it is irrelevant, it us ok to leave out.

The cities in Mexico have zip codes FYI. Any correct address, and usually when a Colonia is mentioned which is old style is not counting on having the zip code. Zip codes have taken away the headaches of the Colonias which are very imperfect and imprecise
disagree Margaret Schroeder : It is certainly relevant and necessary for identification of an address, because street names are not necessarily unique within a city. They are only unique within a colonia.

Colonia

It's an integral part of the address. The closest equivalent in English might be "neighbourhood" or "subdivision" but I don't find these adequate because while they describe what a "colonia" is, they are not a necessary part of the address in English-speaking countries, and so to draw an equivalence is somewhat misleading.

In Mexico they have Colonia Del Valle, and many different suburbs named Colonia so and so. It's the name of the suburb.
