Spanish term or phrase: tablones de madera apuntalados
This refers to wooden boards covered in pitch that were used to close outlets from an 18th century dam (the Tibi dam). I understand that "apuntalados" refers to some kind of shoring or bracing that would have helped the gates withstand the water pressure when they were closed, and I wonder if anyone has come across a similar term in English.

Thanks, it is certainly an alternative... (have you seen this used in the context of an 18 C English dam?) I have since found one description in a hydraulic engineering dictionary that refers to "propping" for "apuntalamiento"...
