Jan 10, 2018 -

Each operating facility inside a substation fulfils an important function, varying in shape and size depending on its location and purpose. They ensure that the total installation can be operated securely and reliably.

The combination of the devices surrounding a circuit breaker – disconnectors and earthing switches and combined instrument transformers that form a functional unit with the circuit breaker – is called the switchgear bay.

At the centre of each switchgear bay is the circuit breaker, which can interrupt the current both in normal operating conditions and in case of disturbances. The switchgear bay is connected to the other operating facilities via disconnectors with an integrated earthing switch.

The combined instrument transformer reports information on the current and voltage to the protection and control systems.

According to the function, a distinction is made between:

Line switchgear bay – this connects the high voltage power line with the busbars.

Transformer switchgear bay – this switchgear bay connects the transformer with the busbars. Noteworthy is that the transformer is connected directly and not by means of a disconnector.

Coupler bay – this switchgear bay forms a flexible connection with the busbars.

What is the difference between a switchgear and a switchyard at a power plant? -
11 abr. 2017 - Switchgear refers to breaker and disconnect panels within the confines of the plant. It's used to switch electrical lineups for various electrical configurations or isolate electrical equipment. In the US, it's mostly 480v equipment but will also be 4160v.

A switch yard is generally a fenced off area with high voltage transformers and gas operated high voltage breakers which is used to distribute power from a power plant to the grid or from the grid to back-end power into the plant. It mostly is dealing with higher voltages.

Switchgear is generally electrical distribution equipment assembled in a metal-enclosed lineup, generally 15kV rated or less but there is 46kV stuff I’ve dealt with. Here’s a switchgear lineup:

A switchyard is a section of a substation where transmission or distribution lines are fed, which may contain switchgear, standalone circuit breakers, transfer switches, reclosers, etc.

Here’s a switchyard:

5 nov. 2018 - ABB has received an order of around $40 million from German transmission grid operator TransnetBW to upgrade a high-voltage substation in Obermooweiler, in Baden-Wuerttemberg.

As part of the upgrade, ABB will install the world’s first 380-kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) which uses an environmentally friendly alternative gas mixture to the industry standard SF₆.

Substations enable the efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity. Within the substation, switchgear controls and protects the network from power outages and facilitates reliable electricity supply.

Switchgear - Wikipedia
In an electric power system, switchgear is composed of electrical disconnect switches, fuses or circuit breakers used to control fan, protect and isolate electrical equipment. Switchgear is used both to de-energize equipment to allow work to be done and to clear faults downstream. This type of equipment is directly linked to the reliability of the electricity supply.
