Wendy Gosselin (asker) Mar 22, 2008:
NO ES director's chair Thanks for clarifying, Jairo, that there is NO WAY this is what we refer to as a "director's chair", which movie directors use (weren't too many film directors back in the 18th century). I did find something called a "directoire chair": http://www.invitinghome.com/chairs/chairs_directoire_6659.ht... I am not sure if it is similar enough to the Spanish link on antiqvaria - ?

Dice así: Silla directorio. Francia, siglo XVIII. Madera de caoba. 80x50x64cm.
Valor $600.00 pesetas, cordial saludo

directory-style chair / directory chair

the "directory style" of furniture is described here. It was especially popular in France:

Directory - style chair (end of XVIII C.).
After the French Revolution a new fashion took hold in Europe. It was characterized by simpler, purer forms and geometries and by the use of such woods, as elmewood, walnut and various fruit-tree woods.

hi, I checked out "directoire chair" and yes, it's correct because "directoire style" is used too in English, please see Wikipedia entry:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Directoire
Directoire style describes a period in the decorative arts, fashion, and especially furniture design, concurrent with the post-Revolution French Directory (November 2, 1795 through November 10, 1799). The style is distinct for use of neoclassical architectural forms, minimal carving, planar expanses of highly grained veneers, and applied decorative painting.

director's chairs

sounds like a bad translation from English...

Definitions of director's chair on the Web:

named for its long use by Hollywood directors, a folding armchair with sling seat and back.

neoclassical style chairs

Interesantísimo el enlace aportado por Jairo. Se trata de unas sillas de estilo neoclásico que se usaron entre la primera y la segunda mitad del período. Puede que haya una denominación más específica.
