The child was looking at photos. I would have gotten the "tuve que dormir en el mueble," but not mueble for car. Cupboard is an interesting choice of words. I haven't heard the word here, but when I was a child on the east coast I heard it and my impression was that it was some sort of kitchen cabinet. So, I was very confused when I read that Harry Potter lived in a cupboard, because unless he was the size of a cat, he wouldn't have fit.

I think you've all answered my question. No, there is no default piece of furniture that is meant when Mexican people say "mueble." I just hear "mueble" frequently whereas we normally wouldn't say "He hit his forehead on the corner of the furniture."

does the text tell you whether the child was in the kitchen, the sitting room or another room? And whether he was sitting on a chair/sofa or on the floor before getting up?

As an interpreter, I have had a Mexican say 'mi esposa está en el mueble', meaning the car. I have also interpreted for a Dominican who said 'tuve que dormir en el mueble' meaning the 'sofa'. This is very difficult to know without asking for clarification. (In both cases, I was able to get a clarification from the speaker, so I'm sure what they were talking about.)

impossible to say exactly without more context but a reasonable stab would be cupboard (my Argentine relations often refer to what I would call a cupbord as a "mueble")
