Spanish term

llegada al poder

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Muriel Vasconcellos (X)

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

There are maybe two dozen ways to translate this. It's a matter of style; everything depends on the rest of your document.

Mandela's Ascension To Power In S. Africa.

After 27 years of lonely, painful and enervating imprisonment in his indigenous South Africa, Nelson Mandela is now in a propitious position to assume the reins of power in South Africa. It is a foregone conclusion, in spite of the diversionary tactics of a small band of white South African malcontents, reactionaries and racists, that the overwhelming number of the 30 million Black South Africans will vote for Mandela in the April 26-28 election."

The term "ascending to power" has been used in the article below as can be seen in the excerpt.

"First the Power, then the Government

The old Communist Party has changed its name but not its tactics, and has through skillful political maneuvers has now gained power in Italy without an electoral mandate.

By Alberto Carosa

Dec. 06, 2001

January 8,1999, will go down in history as the date when a Roman Pontiff met for the first time with a Communist leader who had succeeded in ascending to power in a major western European country. The Pope's 25-minute conversation at the Vatican by Italian premier Massimo D'Alema, which the International Herald Tribune rightly described as a "historic visit," received an enormous flurry of coverage in the secular media. For the most part, in their coverage of the event, reporters bent over backwards to provide what the Communists most desperately need for their motley government coalition: legitimacy."

accession to power

Hi Yvonne

I think 'coming to power' is okay too, but this is another more specific option, much used in political/historical writing.

The second example would be 'accede to power'
