Spanish term or phrase: Registro del Estado Civil y Capacidad de las Personas
Dear colleagues,

The certificate is issued in Argentina and the translation is to be submitted to the Australian Embassy... I would like to know what is the specific name of the Civil Registry in Australia, between several options:
Office of Vital Statistics
Civil Registry and Vital Statistics
Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages
Bureau of Vital Statistics
Other?

Since I am not sure what is the specific name of this institution in Australia and I have not found the specific answer yet

A number of options above, but of all of them, the one that make more sence to me is "Civil Registry and Vital Records" (2nd link).

Australia
In Australia civil registrations are carried out and maintained by state administrations. Tasmania began registrations in 1838, Western Australia in 1841, South Australia in 1842, Victoria in 1854, Queensland and New South Wales in 1856, Northern Territory in 1870, and Australian Capital Territory in 1911. Because early civil registration often involved the churches, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish whether early records are civil or church records. From 1856 civil registration was carried out by government employees and was independent of the church. The information recorded in records varies from state to state. South Australia call the appropriate central registry Principal Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages and in Victoria it is the Government Statist Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. The other states call the registry the Office of the Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

agree  AllegroTrans: Yes, but "vital statistics" only for USA, not suitable Australia//"country neutral" expression commensurate as far as possible with the country of origin is needed

-> Thank you. The problem most translators face is trying to find an equivalent translation, which often is not the thing to do! In this case, my understanding is this is for the Australian High Commission in ?. Regards.
agree  philgoddard: What it's called in Australia is irrelevant.

agree  BBEAU: I think if the certificate was issued in Argentina, the term should be translated according the Argentine Legal system. For me, one of the option is "Registry of Civil Status". Rgards

agree  AllegroTrans: good refs but it isn't a good idea to "mimic" the Australian system

-> depending on where in Australia this is targeted, @Sandra Pozzi should be able to localize her translation
