that I have ever seen for a KudoZ question! And the winner is ... well ... ALL of you who have contributed. As David pointed out, this process is about helping people with their translation questions. As far as handing out the points, I think Liz's answer is correct and is the simplest and most direct solution. I like direct and simple. Thanks everybody for the great discussion.

I agree that simply putting "vial" would suffice. This is not a competition but an attempt to help the Asker with his translation. But do not get confused between these "all-glass" vials or ampoules and the bottle-type vial, which can both be clear glass or amber depending whether the contents are light-sensitive or not (the only reason I know for using amber vials).

Escribo en español para evitar errores. Las respuestas de Liz y David son correctas, todos los "vials" son "sealed vials" sino estarían contaminados. Yo voté por la de David porque contestó primero. Creo que anteponerle sealed o no ponerlo no cambia para nada el sentido. Pero esta discusión sirve para entender la diferencia entre "vial" y "ampoule". Nos enriqueció a todos.

Frankly, I am beginning to not really care which answer is chosen. If it were my translation I would put "vial". Based on all the sound evidence I have found. You may all put whatever you choose, but I have made up my own mind now. Kindly feel free to disagree with all my references, but I stand by them.

Could it possibly be 'vial/ampoule' in the sense of 'either-or'? Lots of examples on the Internet with a "slash" (solidus). Otherwise, it's troubling to see the two terms together because they are clearly not the same thing.
On another note, I read an explanation that an ampoule is a kind of vial, like a narrower term from a broader category, but it was not a scientific reference, so I'm not going to cite it here.

I just noticed that this "frasco-ámpula" is 3ml. I have not been able to find a vial that can contain that little fluid. If my memory does not betray me, vials usually contain 10ml up. And what kills me is that I cannot research more since I have to leave my computer!
So, here are my 2 cents :)

What makes me incline towards "ampoule" (and not only ´cause I proposed it) is the fact that vials usually come in "see through" glass containers and "ampoules" come in amber glass, just like the product description. "frasco-ámpula vidrio ambar"

The vials shown by Liz are indeed vials, but these are then bought by drug manufacturers to sterilise, add their compounds and then "seal" them

Because my first option was "vial" (David, great minds think alike), but then after reading the description, I remembered what we call "ampollas" in Perú and went for ampoule.

So, take a look at the pics, I think they are easier to understand than my explanation. (It´s way past my bedtime) :)
