Spanish term

enfermedad pluripatológica y frágil

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) patient\'s medical history
This is from a list of diagnoses listed in a hospital admission report for an 80-year old patient. The admitting diagnosis is Cuadro Séptico, followed by a list of other diagnoses: insuficiencia vertebrobasilar, encefalopatía degenerativa crónica, cardiopatía isquémica, enfermedad renal crónica, hipotiroidismo primario, ... and at the end of the list comes "enfermedad pluripatológica y frágil".

I haven't come across the term "pluripatológico" before. Google Translate gives several possibilities, including "multimorbidity", and we have "multiple pathology" or "with multiple pathology" in a previous KudoZ question ... but I could still use your suggestions for translating this whole phrase. I also can't tell if the word "frágil" applies to the disease or to the patient.

Thanks for your help.

Discussion

Joseph Tein (asker) Aug 4, 2013:
Found online: "multiple morbidities" ... See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_morbidities

"Multiple morbidities or Multimorbidities is a term which means co-occurring diseases. For example, a person could have diabetes and heart disease and high blood pressure. "

Katarina Kvarnhult Aug 3, 2013:
I think they refer to a fragile patient with multiple pathologies, that it is a summary of the status of the patient.

Several options:

Multipathology, with a combination of diseases, multi-pathological,with multiple illnesses,multi-pathological patients.

frágil can refer to the patient

comorbidity

See the links below. It seems to be the correct medical term for a patient with more than on particular illness
Note from asker:
Hi Gordon, and thanks for your answer as well. I think co-morbidity might have worked here also, but "multiple morbidities" describes the situation here more precisely.

«multi-morbidity», «multimorbidity», «multi-pathology» or «multipathology» or. «complex chronic disease» (Chapter 2). Polypathology will be the term used most.

all my research indicates that "frágil" refers to the patient, not the disease
