Los accidentes de tráfico (AT) relacionados con el consumo de alcohol son una de las principales causas de mortalidad y morbilidad evitable. Diversos estudios han determinado que concentraciones de alcohol en sangre superiores a 0,5 g/l se correlacionan con un riesgo lineal de tener un AT y presentar lesiones de mayor gravedad1,2.

En España, entre el 30 y el 50% de las muertes por AT están relacionadas con el alcohol3; sin embargo, hay todavía muy poca información sobre las características sociodemográficas de los lesionados por AT con alcoholemias positivas atendidos en los servicios de urgencias hospitalarias4,5. Además, en los últimos años se han producido cambios importantes, tanto en la modificación del patrón de consumo6 como en la implantación de la tasa máxima permitida de alcohol en sangre en 0,5 g/l, según legislación de octubre de 1998 (Real Decreto 2282/98).
