Kathryn, your post made me keep thinking. This is some of what I found this morning: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_adipose_tissue. Brown adipose tissue is a very specific kind of tissue. I was reassured to know that since I was translating the description of a bit of tumor removed from the abdominal wall of a woman in her late sixties. it was definitely not that type of heavily vasculated tissue. Note that it's possible there can be a bit of brown adipose tissue in with the white, giving it a "light brown" appearance. This does fit what I've observed tissue labs. I feel comfortable having called it "tan".

Kathryn, I do see it translated as brown or grayish-brown on WordReference.com. I was thinking back to my own years of experience in a medical laboratory and what similar tissues look like. I guess you could call them grayish-brown, but when I visualize the tissue blocks being sliced, the word that springs to mind is more tan than brown. I think of brown as a darker shade.

Anne, can I ask why you're translating "parda" as tan instead of brown? I've always seen pardo as brown, e.g. tejido adiposo pardo, brown adipose tissue. So I'm curious as to why this is different. Not a criticism, nor do I think I'm right, it's just for my future reference. Thanks!
