Can "fístula" ever be translated as "shunt"? In the case of the document in question, it seems that the "fístula" is not the usual thing: an undesirable connection between organs, but something that has been placed by the surgeons. Please read:

Later, referring to an earlier operation:
... y aceptándose la realización de la fístula ...
It seems to be that a Blalock Taussig shunt was installed in a previous operation, and that this operation is to close that shunt.

... Just wanted to confimr that yes, "fístula" is also "shunt", and that re: the Blalock-Taussig procedure in your text, "modified" is part of its name.
