tiras de cabo segundo

En la enfermería estaba yo con el Dr. GÓMEZ y dos marineros enfermeros, de quienes me acuerdo porque al fin de año les di las tiras de cabo segundo.

seaman apprentice (second class) stripes

Exact equivalents are not really possible. Cabo is the next to lowest rate in the Navy, so seaman apprentice would be the US equivalent (which coincidentally carries two stripes also). Leading seaman in the UK.

corporal's stripes

I think it's actually second grade corporal, which must be a rank just above private

Just checked! It's definitely corporal (OR-3 in international military rank code)

You could well be right

but if you read the Wiki article, it seems that the rank varies from country to country

Segundo cabo is Nato OR-3 - I think this is Corporal in the UK and Lance Corporal in the US

Make Love, Not War - that's what I say! ;-)

Spanish Military Rank

Spain

In the Spanish Armed Forces Cabo (Corporal) is the rank between Soldado de Primera (First Class Private) and Cabo Primero (First Corporal). It actually equates to a NATO OR-3, with Cabo Primero equating to an OR-4 and Cabo Mayor to an OR-5.

PS. I hope the article isn't about the South American Armed Forces!!!

I change my suggestion to Leading Seaman

Here are the ranks from the previously cited Wikipedia article

Navy: Leading Seaman Army: Corporal Airforce: Corporal
Note from asker:
I thought about Lance Corporal, but I cannot find any confirmation.
Peer comment(s):

agree Jairo Payan : De acuerdísimo, lo de "tiras" son las "stripes" pero no es otra cosa que "les impuso las insignias de cabo segundo"

disagree patinba : Sorry, but these are marineros, so we need a Navy rate.
