In this case, it is a position at a major opera house. "chief machinist" seems more like for an industrial setting...

head stagehand

Explanation:
Tramoyista.

A tramoyista is definitely a stagehand. However, I'm not completely sure if head stagehand is the correct term.

"Texas is a right-to-work state," says head stagehand José "Hoss" Dovalina, "so we had an easier time relaxing the union rules for this Ring cycle or, maybe, cycles. But if anyone can make it burn and flood over and over again, it's us."

Though if it refers to the 'tramoya', not just moving scenery, then it would be the headd rigger.

As a stagehand you would: load and unload equipment; help carpenters to build and put up scenery; attend rehearsals; move scenery, furniture and heavy equipment during performances; open and close curtains between acts; operate manual and automated scenery-moving machinery; clear the stage and backstage area at the end of the performance.

I've just found 'head machinist', which I didn't know existed until now. However, there aren't many references.

Lautenschläger studied under Carl Brandt at the court theatre in Darmstadt from there he went to Munich, where he worked for 22 years and became the head machinist at the Royal theatre.

operating moving scenery (traditionally the person who does this is a 'flyman'). Flying scenery is often not a job on its own, but can be a part of the role of stagehand or theatre mechanist.

While we were there, we found out exactly what a stage manager, head machinist and lighting director do. Genevieve also chatted with the creatives, Lee Lewis and Kit Brookman about how they get ready for a 22 week long run of a play.

-> I still think stagehand is the best term. I worked for 10 years in the theatre in the UK and Spain, and stagehands/tramoyistas were the only terms I ever heard. Thanks for agreeing, Christian :-)
