In Spain, when you tell the print shop your design has “barniz UVI”, they will usually assume you want to use a special, more expensive varnish, that is applied only to certain parts of the printed design; for instance, to make a logo stand out, or to add texture and contrast to certain parts of the design.

There is another type of varnish, usually called “barniz máquina” in Spain, that is applied to the whole surface of the printed design, usually to shield it or to enhance its look. Both are dried using UV (ultraviolet) light, so it is just a matter of semantics; I would ask the client to make sure what they mean by “barniz UVI”; again, most people here would assume it is a spot UV varnish, also called “reserva UVI”.
