Spanish term
grabado de datums B y C de fundición
Spanish to English
Tech/Engineering
casting of metal parts
Casting metal parts (chassis, housings, etc.) for telecommunications devices; failure modes and effects analysis. The problem is a discrepancy between casting and machining "datums" (data?). The cause is identified as "grabado de datums B y C de fundición a posteriori en molde." What are these "datums"? Shouldn't the word be "data"? My proposed translation is "etching casting data B and C a posteriori (after the fact) on the die."

Use datums
Here is a reference from a CNC machine article, which would be in the same context as your question.
Note that in the same article, "datums" and "data" are used differently. "Datums" refer to engineering input from computer models.
3. Guiding intelligent CNC operations
Touch probes, combined with intelligent tolerancing software, provide a means of machining critical features relative to design-engineered functional datums. The advantage of machining features relative to design datums is that finished parts are more likely to assemble with their mating parts when common datums define both processes. Functional datums machined in a previous operation can be inspected with the probe on the CNC machine. The location of these datums can then be used to modify the location of other features the design engineer has referenced to these datums.
In a similar application, if the functional datums are slightly out of location, the part may still be brought into design specification by moving the related features in the same direction and at the same magnitude as the functional datums.
These techniques help manufacturing create functionally correct parts that are more likely to assemble as the designer intended.
4. CNC machine process control
An important part of a world-class manufacturing process is the ability to determine what a CNC machine's capabilities are, then to maintain these capabilities (keep the machine in control) using statistical process control techniques. Part of the difficulty in achieving this stems from the volume of data that must be collected, as well as the consistency required of these data. One inspection data point entered incorrectly by an operator can invalidate the process control results.
Touch probes in conjunction with SPC software can realize effective data collection where it would be difficult for a human to do so. Real-time SPC software running in parallel with the CNC operations can keep high-quality accounting of the CNC process, predict when maintenance should occur, and prevent bad parts from being made.

According to Eurodicautom, datum and \"nivel de referencia\" are synonymous, and are equivalent to the term \"datum\" in English.
