I would use the word surface instead of ground or floor because what is being punished is in fact the surface of that same ground or floor ( due to constant stepping/walking on it)...

I worked in soil testing years ago. And this is the only term I ever heard that seems to coincide with the result of being walked on a lot- Compacted soil makes plant growth difficult.
In an informal context you could also say the soil was "trampled."

In languages there is something called "collocation" that means that not all words go together ... punished definitely does not collocate with "floors" !!!!!
