saddlebags Explanation: I'm fairly sure this is an alternate definition in Mexico, though I couldn't find a reference. Petaca comes from the Aztec petlacalli meaning chest, from petatl, petate, and calli, house. So we're talking a wicker chest originally, but Santamaría defines it as Arca de cuero, o de madera o de mimbres con cubierta de piel. (Diccionario de Mejicanismos, Francisco J. Santamaría). My only defense for saddlebags other than guesswork is that by extension, petacas means very large hips. :=) |
