Spanish term or phrase: la orden del Toisón de Oro
Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) belonged to this order. I thought I was well up on these "illuminati" type secret sects... But this one rings no bells. Is it popularly known as something else?

Wonderful Back up - Thanks. Strangely enough I was blindly convinced Toisón was a place and so didn't even look it up in my dictionary :-( It came in a list of references to The Peace of This Town and the treaty of that Town... Basic Translator's error Number 4 "Never assume... check :-)

The Order of the Golden Fleece are definitley linked in with "illuminati" conspiracy theories. What a lad old Carlos Quinto was, eh?

Order of the Toison d'Or

Explanation:
The name of the order doesn't translate
The emblem of the order is a golden sheep and "toison" means indeed "fleece" or "unskinned sheepskin".

Good luck!

Berni, probablemente tu la conozca como la conozco yo...

Explanation:
El termino mas conocido para mi es "el vellón de oro" en lugar de Toison.... but the first answer is correct, it is Order of the Golden Fleece

Order of the Golden Fleece as a trans label

Explanation:
" Order of knights founded by Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy (1429), the head of which is the King of Spain." Therefore needs a translation label - suggest the name in Spanish in italics and a translation in English in parentheses, i.e. the Order of the Golden Fleece. Note that the origin of the name may be in Greek mythology.
