Spanish term or phrase: lavativa
This is the title of a painting by Spanish painter Eugenio Lucas Velázquez--La Lavativa--and is held up as an example of an "escena popular". Neither of the possible translations I have found for this word ("enema" and, in a figurative sense, "nuisance" or synonyms thereof) really fit as titles for a painting of this type (especially the former!). Is anyone familiar with this work (I haven't found a thing on the Internet to see what it's about) or can anyone suggest a title? I may end up just leaving it in Spanish!

Thanks!

si yo fuera la traductora del texto, lo dejaría en español. Sin duda no es un término fácil.

I see that everyone had the same problem I did. In the end, I left it in Spanish with a note explaining why. Thank you all for your comments.

some helpful websites...

Explanation:
The only other words I've seen are jeringa, irrigador, and instrumento manual para echar ayudas (medicamento).

Maybe these websites will give you an idea of some of the different uses of "lavativa" in Spanish and Catalan. ¡Suerte!

Lavativa also means : dull, boring, uninteresting

Explanation:
LAVATIVA can be familiarly used IN SPANISH with the meaning of "BORING", "DULL", "UNINTERESTING"...or as a synonym for the spanish words: "aburrido", "soso", "sin gracia", "sin interés", etc.

I don't know whether this can fit your translation.

Ah, I am a native spanish speaker.

The Cleansing

Explanation:
Is another option. Do you have a picture of the painting.... it may mean the act of cleansing something or someone. Figuratively as if "cleansing your soul".

Just a thought!

"Running off at the mouth"

Explanation:
In English we might call this rather rudely 'verbal diarrea" so might be a painting of someone who is a 'blabbermouth" "gossip" of other uncontrolled personality type. Tough one - good luck!
