Spanish term or phrase: más de cuatro
La propuesta de una unión monetaría de América del Norte "escandalizaría a más de cuatro". (comillas en el original).

Is "más de cuatro" a common figure of speech, meaning something like "more than a few"? Or is it just to be taken literally?

More than a few
Explanation:
As a native Spanish speaker, I can say your instinct was right. This means "more than a few". Don't take it literally at all.

This is a very common expression used in Spanish!

Good luck

Thanks, the references and comments which all of you provided were most helpful. Unfortunately, the way the site is set up, it is not possible to divide the points between all of you as you deserve.

Often I find that I run across an expression that is new to me; then I find that it is ubiquitous, and I realize that people have been using it all around me all the time, but I have not been paying attention. This is the way of learning new vocabulary in the School of Life.
