Explanation:
Here I would not translate "kitsch" as we use that word in English too (you wouldn't have to put it in quotes if you didn't want).. and it is used sometimes to denote a certain tackiness..therefore I think the author is trying to convey that the pretension was so over-pretensious that it got almost ridiculous and bordered on tacky or exaggerated.. I hope this helps
