stamp duty Explanation: As per p roige. Stamp duty is paid on official documents. E.g. when I was sorting out my residency, purchasing a flat, getting a bank loan etc. The state gets its cut, and it can be seen in the form of a 'timbre del estado' on official deeds of all kinds. |

Stamp Tax (i.e., the tax on the registration of legal documents) ... Explanation: ... and the stamps in question are not postage stamps, but rather the rubber stamps applied by the government agencies with whom the documents are registered, indicating that the proper fees have been paind. "The stamp tax is a provincial tax" [or, to avoid the somewhat pejorative English connotations of the word "provincial," you could say "regional," even though regions and provinces are not always equivalent). Cheers, HC (PS to Gris -- Ah, how quickly they forget! The phrase wouldn't have sounded odd at all to American ears two hundred-odd years ago, because the Stamp Tax was one of the (perceived) economic inequities that precipitated the American Revolution!) |

stamp tax Explanation: Sorry, this can't be postage. The stamp is the documentary stamp that goes on legal documents and it is a provincial tax because: 1.) the Notary Public is empowered in province 2.) the document, if it deals with real property, goes to the Provincial Registry of Deeds, 3.) if it deals with a corporate document, it goes to the Mercantile Registry of the Province in which the Company is domiciled. Nothing in these transactions is national, unless it affects the CNMV or the Bank of Spain, in which case copies are furnished. (I'm reading this in a Spanish context). |
