Spanish term or phrase: patatas revolcadas
From a Christmas menu at a 5-star Madrid restaurant.

Taco de lomo de ternera con patatas revolcadas

Any ideas? I've found one reference on the web, but no description, and no recipe...

This creamy stew is a thick mixture of potatoes and other vegetables that's sure to warm you on the chilliest of winter days. (This sounds pretty classy and delicious with lomo! )

Espero que te ayude :)

crushed potatoes

Explanation:
this recipe has other ingredients like panceta and chorizo that are added to the crushed potatoes but I don't know if they need to be included in the description

of course, not panceta and chorizo in this case but beef loin cubes so 'beef loin cubes with crushed potatoes'

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Richard, Yes, I think this is it! It was smart of you to search for "papas" instead of "patatas". Thanks a bunch!

hash browns

Explanation:
Hash browns or hashed browns are a simple potato preparation in which potato pieces are pan-fried after being shredded, julienned, diced, or riced. In some cultures, hash browns or hashed browns can refer to any of these preparations, while in others it may refer to one specific preparation. In parts of the UK, hash browns can mean fried left over mashed potato. Hash browns are a staple breakfast food at diners in North America, where they are often fried on a large common cooktop or grill. Often they are pressed with a potato ricer to remove moisture and to give a crispier texture. They are commonly used with burgers or breakfast ideally with bacon. (Wikipedia)

neutral  Michelle Wolfson: Based on the recipe cited by Rachel Fell, I don't get the impression that they are being browned in the pan, just mashed up with the other ingredietns.

disagree  Michelle Wolfson: This would not be stir-frying. Stir-frying entails frying over high heat and moving constantly in the pan (sofreir), based on recipe posted by Ms. Fell. Even so, potatoes can really be stir-fried.

-> "Revolcar:echarse sobra una cosa restregandose en ella" which in my mind is stir friyng. The recipe sounds like th ingredietns are stir fried as well, even if in Spain, and moreover in a 5 star rest. no one would use "papas". The recipe is from S. America

mashed potatoes with...

Explanation:
Looking at the recipe cited by Rachel Fell, I would say that this sounds like mashed potatoes with some additional ingredients added.

So you might say:
Mashed potatoes with pancetta and chorizo.

This would indeed be a recipe seen at a 5-star restaurant in the U.S. Why have ordinary mashed potatoes when you can take it up "another notch" to quote Emeril.

another suggestion http://www.foodrecipesforum.com/2008/07/31/muddled-herb-red-...

"muddled" usually refers to coarsely mashed potatoes, vs. whipped with a beater
