Spanish to English translations [Non-PRO]

Spanish term or phrase: MEC

Hi there

This relates to education in Paraguay so a response from anyone from Paraguay or other parts of South America who are familiar with Paraguay would be much appreciated.

Does MEC stand for Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia or Ministerio de Educación y cultura? Or even both? I have a document about the Education Plan 2024 where MEC is mentioned and which stands for Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia for the purpose of the text but then in two more mentions of it (without the abbreviation) the writer has put in Ministerio de Educación y Cultura. I think this is an innocent typo but I think they are two slightly different state departments. I think the latter relates more to South America in general than Paraguay itself. The website of the former does not clarify things.

I did consult that exact website and I did choose ciencias in the end (no need for the block caps?). I mentioned doing both in my initial question if you had read it. I was wondering if there was a difference and philgoddard explained the name had changed. I think I'll close this thread now.

BTW, the webiste link is here: https://www.mec.gov.py/cms/ and it is "Ministerio de Educación y CIENCIAS"

Hi Anis, I know the English way of putting it. I was wondering what the abbreviation in Spanish specifically was - ciencia or cultura. Thanks for your response but most of those apply to Japan (I did not look through them all). I'm happy with my end response anyway. Thank you.

Thanks Philgoddard for your 'non-answer' (curious as to why you would not answer it though - it was approved as a question after all so why would it be deleted - I don''t do this too often or I would know myself what the deletion policy is). Your non-answer does help things in some way, as the author must have momentarily gone back to pre-2015 in their mind when they were writing up the text. I stuck with Science in the end anyway. Thanks also to Phoenix III though I had spotted those somewhere myself and it was definitely none of those (though I note the similarity you point out with Uruguay re. cultura).

En Uruguay existe el Ministerio de Educación y Cultura (MEC), en Paraguay, existe la Secretaría Nacional de Cultura (SNC), el Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (CONACYT) y otra secretaría para IT.

Asker: Hi there, I did not see your response there. I clicked that link and as far as I could see there was none for Paraguay. It was mostly japan. i did not look through all the pages but I did think of good old google to begin : ) It can differ from country to country as you can see. Some countries add sport to their education ministry while others don't. Thanks in any case.
