by holding back the incoming steam Explanation: i.e. by physically blocking it, the steam being deflected back off the "parales" attached to the inner walls -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 day7 mins (2010-08-10 23:54:50 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- In response to Ann's helpful note in her peer comment, to de-confuse my answer I'll suggest a translation starting at "no evidenciándose": "there being no evidence that the fitting of new stays to the bottom/base and sides produces a significant effect by holding back the incoming steam". an alternative translation would be: "... by deflecting the incoming steam".
