One might think this would be the translation, although "extemporáneo" in Schuster & Schuster is given as meaning untimely, inopportune or inconvenient, whereas "extemporaneous" in the Oxford English Dictionary is given as "spoken or done without preparation" (ad libbed). Any way you look at it its root is literally "out of time". So it all depends on what the author wants to say!
