Law/Patents
Spanish term or phrase: contrario imperio (Venezuela)
Context: "El juzgado puede revocar una medidda por CONTRARIO IMPERIO o cuando media una apelación contra una decisión de un tribunal inferior."

Two learnéd colleagues plus a Venezuelan lawyer have told that this means "contrario imperio" means "contrary to law." I can't help still having a "penita" that this is not so, and that it means that a judge can rule on appeal against a decision from another judge at the same level ("imperio" being the same as judicial authority) or, of course, against an appeal from a lower court.

If you happen to have DIRECT, AUTHORITATIVE KNOWLEDGE of what this means, please let me know. I already looked in the following legal biling. dictionaries: Thomas L. West's, Louis Robb's and Cabanelas', as well in Spanish monoling. legal dict's Palomar de Miguel's, Osorio, de Pina's, Espasa's and web searches that have yielded examples of its use but no definitions or instances that could shed light on its meaning.

Thanks.

Explanation:
"Contrario imperio" originates from Roman Law. See references:

ZWISCHENBESCHEIDE IM RÖMISCHEN PROZEß 265

Prätor handelt (501). Es scheint also nicht richtig, daß das, was
dem letzteren erlaubt, dem privaten Richter verweigert worden sei
(502). In Wirklichkeit ging es hier um zwei verschiedene Fragen,
und zwar um die Änderung des Urteils (dadurch verbunden mit
dessen Aufhebung) in D. 42,1,62 und um dessen Ergänzung in
D. 42,1,42 (503).

Dann ist D. 42,1,14 anzuführen:

Idem (Celsus) libro vicesimo quinto digestorum.

by imperative to the contrary

Explanation:
I'm suggesting this, because in all the Google hits I found, the "imperio" was NOT contrary to law, but rather, affirmed the existence of a law to the contrary.
I wouldn't be surprised if, as my colleague suggests, this would also cover cases of jurisdiction to the contrary. In any case, it is an imperative.
