Spanish term or phrase: La embarcación se embargó preventivamente
I know the term "embargo" is not appropriate here. There are several words that come close (seizure, attachment, lien...: the ship was seized as a precautionary measure; an attcahment was placed on the ship; a lien of attachment was placed on the ship... ) I don't know. Keep in mind the ship will eventually be auctioned to pay off a debt but the context refers to the preliminary stages of the proceedings.
Thanks for your help.

English translation:un embargo precautorio is "an attachment in aid of execution"
Explanation:
So I would say that an attachment in aid of execution was placed on the vessel (seems like Mexican legal terminology). I am a lawyer in Mexico and this is standard language for many reps and warranties.

An embargo precautorio is established upon petition by the plaintiff in order to secure payment of an unperformed obligation. And yes, it is one of the first steps in a legal proceeding before a judge.

Both answers received make sense (The other one was "A lien was placed..."). However, I chose this one because it teaches me a new term ("an attachment in aid of execution") which seems appropriate for the case.

A lien was placed on the ship

Explanation:
I would say "lien" because the lien *is* the first step in the process. Cheers.
