Both of the above answers are correct, however, one writes for example on a check "un mil pesos", to avoid someone from adding a digit.
For example if one would write "mil pesos" it would be esay for someone to just add in front of "ocho mil pesos".
So it is really a measure to insure that it is clera that is is only ONE thousand pesos.
