A medical consent form in an open study of a new medication. The volunteer patient is told to ask questions of the "médico del estudio".
I know what it means, but is there a standard way of saying it? Maybe "the research physician"? Can't get the old brain working today!

"Principal Investigator" o "PI" es lo que aparece aquí en USA en los "informed consents", y es la persona a quien el paciente que acepta participar en un estudio debe dirigir sus preguntas. "Study Doctor" es una 2da. opción que se usa a veces para evitar repetir "PI".

This was an ultra formal form, so I chose your suggestion, although Joan W. is right, too. I found "study doctor" and "principal investigator" all over the place.

Explanation:
It's much simpler than that. You can just say the "study doctor." This is the doctor that supervises the patient during a clinical trial. I use it all the time, and no one has ever questioned it. Below are just two examples where it is used.
