neurotomy or microvascular decompression of the trigeminal nerve Explanation: The English and Spanish terms are very different in this case. Gasser's ganglion is better known as the trigeminal nucleus in English (Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary). "Decompression" surgery is more accurately termed "microvascular decompression surgery" (to differentiate from tumoral or other types of compression). I couldn't find any reference to "retrogasserian" or "retronuclear" surgery in literature written by native English speakers. I did find a reference to "suboccipital microvascular decompression" (http://www.neurosurgery-umms.com/s0231decompression.htm). Trigeminal procedures are often included under facial nerve procedures, further complicating the search for accurate terminological equivalents. There is an excellent description of the conditions and surgical procedures at http://www.hemifacialspasm.org/cof/mipa06.shtml.
