intercurrent illness
Explanation:
INTERCURRENT ILLNESS IN TYPE 1 DIABETES

A common source of difficulty in diabetes management is regulation of blood sugars during intercurrent illness.

Increased counter regulatory hormones usually increase insulin requirements and although decreased caloric intake can sometimes decrease insulin requirements, some insulin is always required.

Patients are advised to proceed to ER for the following:

if vomiting occurs, especially if more than one time per hour
if unable to eat
if there are still moderate to laarge urinary ketones despite extra insulin
if the child is at risk of hypoglycemia (glucose < 4 and unable to tolerate oral intake)
if there are symptoms of DKA
1) MONITORING: The most important step in the management of intercurrent illness in diabetes is frequent monitoring. Blood glucose levels as well as urine for ketones should be monitored at least every 4 hours
