Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Science - Medical (general) / CT Scan of Sinuses
Spanish term or phrase: Contactante
In a CT scan of the paranasal sinuses, it states there is a "espolón óseo
contactante". My guess would be a "contacting bone spur", but I cannot find a sentence like this anywhere in my research, so I am wondering if there is a better term for it in Spanish. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Kate

English translation:that touches
Explanation:
I can't find an equivalent word for this in English, but another way of saying it is "que contacta". You would have to change the sentence and say what the spur touches. Here is an explanation:
"Como hallazgo adicional, el septo nasal está desviado hacia la derecha y presenta espolón óseo que contacta el cornete medio derecho
Diagnóstico: cornete medio paradójico izquierdo, sin obstrucción del meato medio. Desviación del septo nasal hacia la derecha con espolón óseo contactante.."

seven regions and their severity grading are as follows (Figure 3). For the sake of brevity, the score of 0 will not be further described since it indicates absence of deformity for all seven regions. 1) Spur, where a score of 1 is “mild, may not require treatment”, 2 is. “intermediate”, and 3 “touches turbinate”.

Kate, I get your point, but I don't think there is an exact equivalent in English. I can't find anything for "touching/contacting bone spur", and nobody else has so far. A solution is to be vague and say surrounding structures or something. Some examples:

Bone Spur of Nose - DoveMed
https://www.dovemed.com/diseases-conditions/bone-spur-nose/ What are the possible Complications of Bone Spur of Nose? The possible complications of Bone Spurs of Nose include: Without treatment, in some individuals, bone spurs can cause severe uncontrollable pain, by impinging on surrounding structures such as the tendons and nerves...Bone spur is an abnormal bone growth that can develop on the surface of bones. Usually, bone spurs are not painful by themselves, but may cause pain when they rub against the nerves and press surrounding tissue

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thank you for these resources. They explain really well the use, but in the original Spanish doc, it doesn't say what the bone spur actually touches (tissue or the turbinate). I find it difficult to write "that touches" without writing what it does touch. It reads incomplete for me. any thoughts?

agree  Chema Nieto Castañón: As indirectly suggested ("by impinging on surrounding structures") impinging bone spur sounds as a reasonable translation.

-> Thank you, Saltasebes! After posting my first answer I did think of "impinging bone spur", but most examples I found were about rotator cuffs, so I was hesitant about using it for nasal bone spurs, but that's good to know.
