The prefered spelling in English is Meso-America (hyphenated), according to the Oxford, although the unhyphenated version is also acceptable.

Central America is the region from Mexico to Panama, also know as the Isthmus.

South America is everything else South of Panama, to the tip of Chile and Argentina, where the Straits of Magellan are located.
