"Estado libre asociado"

Explanation:
This is the special status (as a "Free Associated State") that Puerto Rican independence advocates seek in respect of the United States. They don't want statehood, and they certainly don't want the current status.

Means that your teach does not know really Spanish = Estado libre Asociado

Explanation:
It means that, for instance, you have the Comesur, the trade organization, of certain countries of South America. Well, not all the countries are in it. Peru, for instance, is not, but although for geographical reasons he is not in, he wants to reach special agreements, or see if it would be good to enter. So, he signs as
Estado libre asociado, that is, he is not a full member ("Libre") but he is there in certain way, (Asociado).

Commonwealth

Explanation:
I would like to clarify in response to Nexus's answer that Puerto Rico's present status is that of a commonwealth of the United States. El Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico.

Commonwealth

Explanation:
I AM FROM EL ESTADO LIBRE ASOCIADO DE PUERTO RICO. We are a Commonwealth and a territory of the United States. It has nothing to do Independendce or Statehood. The Commonwealth receives assistance and protection from the US government but the Puertorican government has authorize in all local matters. We have our own laws. In 1898, the spanish surrendered Puerto Rico to the US at the end of the Spanish-American War. We, Puertoricans, are US Citizens, and can move to the mainland without immigration restrictions.
Any more questions about the Commonwealth please let me know. I know my history. The Commonwealth was adopted in 1952.

More about Estado Libre Asociado - Commonwealth

Explanation:
In other words...The Commonwealth Government has its own Constitution Laws which were adopted in 1952 under the inquisition of Governor Luis Munoz Marin. The Governor is the Chief Executive Officer who can be re-elected an unlimited number of times unlike the President of the US who can only an 8 year term. The Commonwealth is divided into 8 senatorial districts and 40 representatives. Puerto Rico is represented in the US Congress by a Resident Commisioner. He is elected to a 4 year term but has no vote in Congress. Most Federal Laws apply to Puerto Rico as thus it were a state.
It is not called The Commonwealth of the US. We are JUST a territory of the US.
There is a lot more that can be said about the Commonwealth and how it works. Puerto Rico is the only country with such system. Education was the main concern for the Commonwealth.

Free Associated State/Commonwealth

Explanation:
Just a little more info, Angela. Puerto Rico is a free associated state in relation to the US because the United Nations required us to give them statehood or independence. The people of Puerto Rico have voted to accept neither. So, their Commonwealth is still associated with the US as a territory. The literal translation of what you asked for is Free Associated State, but one could use Commonwealth just as correctly in relation to Puerto Rico.

Associated Free State

Explanation:
This is the status that Puerto Rican independence advocates seek in respect of the U.S. That is, they don't want statehood and they certainly don't want the present situation, either. They want to become an "Associated Free State".
