assistantships Explanation: This from the Larousse Sp.-Eng. dic. Def. of pasantía from DRAE: "Ejercicio del pasante en las facultades y profesiones." And of pasante: "El que asiste y acompaña al maestro de una facultad en la ejercicio de ella, para imponerse enteramente en su práctica." |

Practicum Explanation: All the rage in College now: spend your last year working at a job, getting hands-on experience. The first field to do this was the Faculty of Law, which hired student help as "pasantes" (law office trainees); now everyone does "pasantías" and many courses require it. (In Spain, anyway). UCM, UAM, UAB |

teacher training Explanation: ... is my guess. In Mexico a "pasante" is someone who has finished the coursework for his BA but hasn't completed his thesis or "servicio social". |

private tuition Explanation: In the North-West of Spain, where I come from, we give the name "pasantia" to the type of private tuition which takes place not in a "proper" school but in the teacher's house or some other premises prepared for that use. |

Clerkship, Practicum, Internship (depending) Explanation: "Pasantía" is some type of practical work performed by students of professional careers in their last year of study. For lawyers and physicians is called a "clerkship", for nurses a "practicum". This seems to involve a teacher. I think I've heard the term "intership" used to refer to this type of "student teacher." Otherwise, I think the term "clerkship" applies to this type of experience and may be even used in some places for teachers as well. So with "clerkship" you are OK. If you want to be 100%, find out how these "student teachers" or "teacher trainees" are officially called in your local school system. |
