Explanation: *core curriculum* is the closest we have in the U.S. to this concept. You might even want to call it the *Freshman year core curriculum*. This is an approach put in place about six years ago by the college I retired from, and reflects a national trend in the same direction. It is supposed to allow freshmen to enjoy a *common experience* (another "term" that grew out of this attempt at maximizing the college's resources, plus aiming for greater student retention).
