Spanish term or phrase: Universidad Externado de Colombia
I know that several dictionaries say "externado" refers to day-students. Is that a fact? Are these Colombian universities so named because they only teach day-time students? Is there anyone who has first-hand knowledge of this?

Explanation:
I lived for 15 years in Bogotá, left the country last August, for security reasons, so let me tell you about the Externado University:

Universidad Externado de Colombia should not be translated, because that's their name.

Externado means you do not room on campus.
100 years ago students would go to school and would live on campus . This university began with a new way of going to school, without having to live on campus. That's how the name was born.
They have all the traditonal programms (law, economics, business administration etc.)
This was the first University in Colombia to established a 5 year program for hotel and turism management.

saludos

You gave accurate, appropriate and to the point information, explaining the origin and reason for the name, without stretching its meaning by making assumptions that it offered distance learning, etc.

Regarding translating the name, I do believe I owe my clients and/or potential readers a translation or an explanation (by way of footnotes) of the names of institutions which otherwise they may not understand or, worse, make wild speculations about.

Thanks for your accuracy.

Explanation:
I don't have first-hand knowledge of this. You might want to take a look at the following website about Columbia Education system (it gives several e-mail addresses and you can even ask your question directly):

http://www.usc.edu/dept/education/globaled/wwcu/background/C...

This University seems to be involved in non-traditional studies/Distance higher education.

Non-traditional studies:
Distance higher education
Institutes of higher education offer distance education programmes. They are also offered by regional centres (CREADS) and the Universidad Externado de Colombia. Areas covered include Educational Sciences, Health, Economics, Architecture, Engineering and Social Sciences.
