Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Spanish term or phrase: nequen
This word appears in two passages from a 16th-century history of pre-Colombian Mexico. My guess is that it is a type of fiber or hide, and that the word originates in a Mexican indigenous language. Any help or insight from the experts out there will be much appreciated. The passages are:
"El tributo que estos chichimecas pagaban era conejos y liebres, venados, pieles de fieras y mantas de nequen."
"...aunque los reyes y señores solían traer debajo de las pieles algunos paños menores de nequen muy delgados, ó de algodón los que los alcanzaron."

English translation:henequén
Explanation:

I chose this answer because it was the first to mention "henequen," but thanks to all of you. To jps2000, I was interested to see your reference; that work happens to be what I am translating, but I had no idea the source text had been digitized. Thanks.

nequen

Explanation:
Como se trata del nombre de un material específico, no debería traducirse

como Nota del Traductor yo me fijaría primero en un site mexicano sie xiste la explicación de qué tipo de fibra se trata y luego la insertaría.
Good Luck!

Henequén=American agave

Explanation:
I agree with elmex and the background provided.
I think the word spelling isn't right. This American agave can be usually found in the state of Yucatán, Mexico. It's their main crop.
